Waterford Expansion

Genzyme Waterford secured approval for the expansion of their existing manufacturing capabilities and associated infrastructure over the next 3 years. This IDA supported programme of expansion is driven by the growing demand for Genzyme products which are used by patients in almost 90 countries worldwide.

Genzyme Corporation, which is one of the largest biopharmaceutical companies in the world first set-up operations in Ireland in November 2001 and has since invested over €280m on its 37 acre site. This wave of investment is the fourth major development of the site, which by 2010 will see total capital investment over €400m.

The €130m investment programme comprises of the following:

Expansion of existing biological Fill Finish facility

Provision of new offices, cafeteria and associated facilities & infrastructure

Expand existing QC Laboratories

Provision of softgel oral dose form for new product

Genzyme is expanding its existing site biological fill and finish operations with the addition of a 2^nd isolated filling line, three additional lyophilizers and associated upgrade and provision of new utilities and support areas. The expansion will support increased demand for Genzyme’s biological products such as Cerezyme^®, Myozyme^® and Thymoglobulin^®. Work has commenced on extending the 6,800m² building to facilitate additional equipment which will quadruple existing capacity to over 250 fills per year. Construction got underway in the summer of 2008 with completion late 2009 followed by a start-up, commissioning and validation phase leading to commercial readiness in mid 2011.

Site infrastructure is also undergoing a significant expansion with the addition of 5,600m² of new offices, cafeteria and associated facilities coupled with the recent completion of our existing QC laboratories. The QC laboratories expansion doubled the existing laboratories capability, providing additional microbiology, chemistry, stability and associated support areas. These developments provide support to existing site activities as well as providing capacity and space for future growth.
