What originally brought you to Genzyme?

I was studying in WIT and I heard of Genzyme, it was a new start up in Waterford at that time. The company and the nature of their products really interested me.

How long have you been working with Genzyme?

This December, I will be 7 years with Genzyme.

Please state what role you currently hold and any other roles you have had since joining?

I joined the company as a QC Chemist, 12 months later I was promoted to a QC Lead Analyst, 18 months later I was promoted to a QC Team Leader. I remained in this position for 3 years when I was then promoted to a QC Manager which is the position I hold currently.

What keeps you motivated and inspired?

Within Genzyme there is constant change, always striving to improve. Every day, never mind every year things are changing. You never plateau and no matter what level you are at within the organisation you are always challenged.

How much emphasis does Genzyme place on Training and Development- are there opportunities to develop?

I have progressed through the organisation within a short period of time. The training and personal development plans that are put in place in Genzyme have enabled/empowered me to develop myself and my career to date. More specifically the ‘Management Fundamental Programme’ has provided me with the necessary skills and tools to develop as an effective manager.

How is campus life in Genzyme different to anywhere else you have worked?

Fantastic, very supportive and friendly. There is a respect for people here that I have not encountered anywhere else.

What benefits that working in Genzyme provide you with, do you value the most?

I would have to say- location as I’m from the area and the health insurance cover for my family are the two I would personally value. As part of my role, I value the training and continued support following training that is provided here.

Can you identify the top five reasons why you enjoy working with Genzyme?

How does your manager/team mates inspire you?

I have an excellent team around me, therefore I strive to do right by my team, that is the cornerstone of my work and I believe that the rest will follow. I would have great respect for my colleagues and peers, everyone works hard and is expected to deliver. Reaching a target or a deadline inspires you to start all over again.

How have you been challenged in your role?

As a Genzyme employee you are challenged all the time……the current challenge is implementing the change identified in QC while keeping the day to day work going at the same time , whilst working with all QC Team members ensuring that they are always engaged and supportive of the process.

What do you like most about your role?

The constant pace of change brings its own set of challenges and problems. Overcoming problems and providing solutions gives me great satisfaction!

What have you discovered about Genzyme that has surprised you?

Genzyme are willing to appoint people based on performance as opposed to years of service.

How has Genzyme helped you achieve a work/life balance?

I have always felt supported by the company, my colleagues and my managers here. There is a focus in Genzyme on the output/quality of your work, once you meet your targets, you are empowered and afforded the opportunity of flexitime.
